Treatments July 25-30, 2007
Here are the details of the treatments that Michael got to address both his Multiple Sclerosis and also to help with the degeneration of his lumbar spine. Please see the donation page to help the Swift family.
Umbilical Stem Cell Treatments:
Here Michael is getting an infusion of CD34 CD133 and Mesenchymal Umbilical Stem Cells. CD34 and CD133 may help to precipitate production of glial and oligodendrocyte to help with remylination. Mesenchymal have been shown to be beneficial in helping to regulate the immune system.
Bone Marrow Transplant:
Rebecca didn't have the stomach to take a picture while the doctor was taking out so much of Michael's bone marrow. But you can see the gauze where they removed the marrow from his leg.
The bone marrow transplant was done to enhance growth factors and to utilize Michael's own stem cells.
Transplant:
Besides getting 2 IV drips, the doctor also put Plasma in Michael's back which
helps
guide the stem cells to areas of inflammation.
CVAC Altitude Conditioning (Video):
Dr. Steenblock wanted Michael to stay a few more days than planned to have additional CVAC treatments. He did a total of 10 hours of Cyclic Variations in Altitude Conditioning™ over 6 days. CVAC simulates the condition of going up and down in altitude quickly. Intermittent Hypoxia is supposed to spur the release of his own stem cells and well as increase his platelet count.
The CVAC appeared to have other benefits as well. It improved circulation. Michael's right leg, which had been purple for many months, turned to a normal color after only one treatment in the CVAC. It also seemed to alleviate some of his back pain, and may have helped him to walk better for a while.
