What's new? (updated March 29, 2008)

In December I was given an epidural to evaluate the potential benefits of performing a surgery on my back. While I was unaware of how it was affecting me, after the epidural started wearing off, I realized how much it had actually been helping.

The doctor feels it may be beneficial to do a more minor two level decompression surgery. To address a buildup of what is known as lagamentum Flavum, which is a connective tissue in the spinal vertebrae as well as removing a herniation I have at one level. This will be removing material without adding screws or fusion. Since the state of my back could cause stress on the surrounding discs, I believe this is called adjacent segmental disorder, or something like that.

I have also found that I am eligible for intravenous vitamin C or Peroxide to address a vascular (blood Flow) issue I am having in my right leg. So I have been doing a weekly intravenous infusion of Vitamin c and DMSO or Hydrogen Peroxide and DMSO. Followed up by a shot of B-Vitamin.

I have now received a follow up EMG, a nerve conduction test, which clearly showed some nerve compression from my back. However, it was not severe enough to be causing all of my problems, but enough to contribute to them. So between the results of the Epidural and the EMG the value of doing a a more minor decompressive surgery may be of some benefit. This would address a herniated disk as well as a build up of ligamentum Flavum in my back.

If it alleviates some of the pain as the epidural did, it should facilitate being able to strengthen my core in order to add stability to my back. As it is now I get an unrelenting focused pain on a spot on my Sacrum when I try to exercise. It is a referred pain as it does not respond to touching the area that I feel the pain at. That is so frustrating. Relieving the stress that this pain causes should also have benefits in promoting a more healthy state and help my MS.
As MS has a strong correlation with stress.
